Our two males were named Rick and Ricky.

It’s nice that you pointed out how lead is most harmful to children under the age of 6 because a child’s growing body could absorb lead easily. Our first child is about to be born and we want to make sure that he is going to be safe in our house. So for that, we should probably ask for lead inspection services now.

How long from the moment you had rashes on your hands and body where they completely gone and not visible . Also I’m on day 5 and suddenly developed a fever . I thought fever was the first symptom . The rash was my first symptom. Be awesome if any one could reply how long did the rash take to completely disappear including scabs being gone completely. Thanks .

Omg! This thread is awesome.
My kids had a horrible fever, followed by very bad sore throats didn’t want to eat but I thought it was just a cold as I was changing a diaper I noticed they had little spots on the top of their mouth but didn’t think much of it.
Next morning I wake up with all the same symptoms terrible two days. And then boom ashes on my hands a feet worst pain ever, I panicked went to the er and welp guess what it’s hfmd! My boys didn’t show any rashes really so I had no idea! It hit me hard. I’m concerned tho, doctor gave me prednisone (steroids). I’ve been looking into it and you don’t need it. Should I be taking it?? Or just let it run it’s corse.???

I fully support the music school settlement. As a child, my oldest sister took piano lessons there & at age 14, she was the youngest pianist to play for major Broadway plays @ Karamu House on E. 89th & Quincy. All of us sang growing up & she was our accompianist. Without her, we couldn’t have been in so many plays there and even had leading roles. She’s 87 & still playing the piano.

This survey omits too many good choices. In my opinion the best theatre experience where children and teens and adults are well trained in all the theatre arts is NEAR WEST THEATRE (reason founder Stephanie Hrbek given Ohio Arts Prize); also newest fine playground is at Edgewater Park next to Upper Picnic Pavilions; for nature experience why not include amazing hike/bike Metroparks Trails all along the Cuyahoga, accessible from Tremont Point, from Wendy Park on Lake Erie or near Viaduct in Ohio City-trail leads all the way to connect with Cuyahoga Valley Nat’l Recreation area; in Slavic Village there is the Velodrome, plus more trails for walkers/bikers; as for museums, we love CMA (free), CNHM (free on Sundays for all Clevelanders), Science Center, & attend all regularly; for swimming, YMCAs and City Rec Centers, for gymnastics, why not include Czech Sokol Gymnastics, great resource for many years! Metro Hospital now has an even more convenient location in Ohio City, between the lacrosse field at Urban Community School and the squash courts at Urban Squash. Many new gaming places abound, from Bocce Courts at StoneMad, to shuffleboard and board game places to climbing gym and Mystery House in Ohio City.

I’m 27 and I caught it from my kids this week and it has been absolutely miserable!! My throat hurt so bad I thought it was strep throat but tested negative for that. The fever part was miserable. The throat part is miserable. Now all the sores started showing up! It feels like I stuck my hand in some nettles and little needles in them. Plus the itch! It’s insane. I feel really bad for my kids, now that I know first hand what they experienced. They’re too young to really explain what they were feeling.

I just turned 26 and I caught HFMD and have been sick with it for almost a week now. I have a FULL BLOWN CASE and it is TORTURE. I think this is the worst virus I’ve ever had. Started with a 103.3 fever Tuesday morning along with a sore throat, body aches, etc. By Thursday fevers and other symptoms (besides sore throat) were all gone but then my hands were super itchy and I noticed red bumps appearing. Now I have bumps all over my hands, feet, and face. My hands look PLAGUED. My hands and feet are so painful too. It hurts to wash my hands or do anything. So itchy too. I haven’t been able to sleep at all due to the constant itching. It’s torture. If your child has this virus, BE CAREFUL. I’m never even around children and somehow I managed to pick this virus up and get a horrible case of it. I wouldn’t wish this upon my worst enemy.

Thanks for letting me know that counseling services will help me self-reflect and fix my own mistakes. It’s really difficult to be a parent and I’m not really sure if what I’m doing is right most of the time. Great info! Thanks. My great nephew has a bad case. Daycare won’t take him, so guess who did? Yup, me. And let me tell ya. Hfmd really keeps you moving. (When caring for others) I have been putting him in baths with lavender and Epsom salt. And wengo outside and I put him in a baby pool. When we are not in water i lather him up in Vaseline and put on his sweat pants and long sleeve t-shirt. Not forgetting his hands and feet. Socks on both… his appetite is slim so I make sure he has lots of iced drinks. He for the most part is happy. Tylenol and a special mouthwash from the dr. The 18 month old is more like himself. I personally have one sore under my tongue and my ear hurts when I swallow. I see a dr today. Fingers crossed I don’t have it. I work with old ladies! But yes lots of hand washing. Thank God we are in a pandemic to re-teach us how to wash out hands and such.

My 1 yo had it, she sneezed in my face and there you go, I have it all over my body. Almost fever the fist day and sore throat (thinking it strep) but by 3rd day OMG blister at the bottom of my feet, in between my toes and tip.of my hands feel terrible

Yes, me too. I’m a father whose son got it from daycare. He healed quickly, but now I have it. Monday 102.7 Fever and chills. Tuesday mild fever off and on and by Tuesday night fever broke but some pimples on hand appeared. Wednesday it started getting worse and by Wednesday night I had mostly on my knees and elbows. A little pimple or two on my face and hands, but my hands did feel a little sore. My feet heals felt sore too but didn’t see any blisters. Mostly was my elbow and knee that hurt. Wednesday night was hard to sleep due to the burning sore feel. Thursday my elbows and knees felt better but my hand and feet got worse. Really sucks. Now it is Friday and my hands and feet still hurt. I’m hoping the pain subsides over the weekend. The only thing that seems to help is ice packs.

A belated thank you for writing this article. (I know I’m a couple of years late!) Although I am not a parent, I was an LCSW for many years, and I am shocked that there are not more mental health professionals speaking out against these ISR lessons. You can plainly see in many videos of these lessons, the look of shock on the child’s face that their parent is not responding to their screams for help and their attempts to reach out to be rescued. Most are too young to even understand they are in a “lesson,” which makes it even more traumatic because they simply think this other adult is hurting them while their parent stands by. Even if they are old enough to understand they are there to learn, their little systems are being, as you said, flooded with cortisol and I would assume adrenaline, which would make them feel as if they were literally fighting for their lives.
The trauma, loss of trust in the parent with possible contribution to attachment issues, and later anxiety, personality or depressive disorders, make these lessons a danger to the mental health of children. Thanks again for bringing the issue to the attention of the public!

Thanks Jeff! I’ve experimented with lots of different cleaners and soaps. Right now I’m working on a “bathroom” blog post and the personal care products are really tough to choose…so far I haven’t found a “natural” shampoo or conditioner that have really worked for me. Cutting out artificial scents, flavors, and colors should help improve health and your overall enjoyment of life because your senses will return to a natural, increased level of sensitivity. I use unscented soaps throughout the house…in the dishwasher (7th Gen powdered is cheap and works), liquid dish soap, hand soap, body wash, face wash, laundry…etc.

I have been told by professionals dealing with adolescent depression that it is important not to be afraid to ask if the teen is thinking about suicide. This does not put the thought in their head, as we parents fear, but rather opens up a conversation which may be too hard for the child to bring up.

If the child says they have been thinking about it, it’s important to stay calm and let them know you are there to talk with them, and then arrange for professional help to learn about next steps for help.

As one who worked at Akron Children’s Hospital with parents whose children had been admitted for mental health concerns including suicidal ideation or attempts, I felt it important to share this.

That was very insightful. Although my baby days are over I enjoyed your wisdom. I have loved you since your first day on Fox 8 and miss seeing you! What gets most overlooked about the “controversial” topic of a timeout is that there is no magic to the phrase itself. Whether or not timeouts work has everything to do with how the parent uses the term. This piece doesn’t clear that up.
The concept of a time out with a child is the same as a concept of a time out in sports – where the term originated. You don’t “put” a child into time out; that’s more like handing out a penalty or punishment. Likewise, in sports, the referee doesn’t “put” a player or team into time out. The player or coach “calls” time out so the team can regroup. There is no penalty or judgment when a time out is taken; the clock merely stops and play is temporarily suspended.
Timeouts for children work well when handled in the same spirit.
As a parent, when it’s time to call timeout, you don’t send the child away to a “timeout corner” to think about what he or she has done; that would be more like a penalty or punishment. Instead, you take the time out together so the child (and perhaps you as well) can calm down gently, without anger or penalty.
That’s all a time out is: An effective way to give a young child time, space and loving support to learn how to calm him/herself down. Very little talking is needed during a timeout, because a timeout recognizes that the child is not able, at that moment, to reason or think rationally. If there is any talking, it should be gentle reassurances by the parent that 1) everybody gets overwhelming feelings from time to time; 2) the feeling will pass soon enough; and 3) you never stop loving or caring for the child – even when there are rough moments.
When handled in this spirit, there’s no need to ask about an age-appropriate length for a timeout, as the article offers. If you’re sitting calmly and lovingly with the child, 1) he/she won’t feel as though he/she has been sent away and abandoned, and 2) you’ll know when the timeout should end, because everybody has calmed down.

I have been told that the older you are the more it hurts. The sensation in the hands and feet are much worse. Just went through Christmas watching my great nephew of 8 deal with the pain of this. For the mouth equal portions of a liquid antacid (Malox) with Benadryl can be used as a gargle for some relief.

My 6 month old got hfmd and then gave it to my 2 year old and now I have it and let me say this is horrible ot is so painful i have been searching for ways to relieve the pain from the rash in my case my feet are killing me I can barley walk and nothing seems to make it better. Does anyone know of anything?? I cant believe that this is what my poor babies felt. Seriously one of the most painful thing I’ve ever had.

People say there are remedies to HFMD except sleep and rest. This is only some what true.

First and foremost, CLIP YOUR CHILDS FINGERNAILS ASAP. Bacteria behind fingernails scraping away at and exposing the sores is no good.

Now, if your child has it, the worst day will be at the beginning when the sore throat appears. Immediately you think “popsicle” or anything cold. This is a “different” kind of sore throat, where cold liquids do not sooth, but make it worse.

An antihistamine and a tylenol, washed down with room temp water is good for fever and itching.

Don’t “go easy ” on the liquids that night in fear of peeing the bed. You’ll need to wash the sheets anyways. Keep them hydrated, relaxed, and soothed with an oatmeal bath.
Don’t waste your breath telling them not to scratch, they’re going to. No long fingernails = no biggie.

Dont cover the sores with bandaids, etc. That’ll prolong healing time.

As others have said, go out for sun and a 15 min walk to get the blood flowing, thus removing toxins.

Probiotics are helpful because this is mostly in your gut. Dehydration leads to constipation.

SLEEP is #1. Take 8 hours of extended release rest followed by 30 min naps 4 times a day (if your lucky).

Eat good foods. No happy meals. Low sugar, low sodium.

#2 TRY to forget about everything stressing you out (if you an adult with it).

#3 learn to look up your wife’s claim that “adults can’t get it” prior to snuggling up with your little guy/gal and taking a sneeze to the face (the reason i have it).

This is not chickenpox. Itll come right back if you expose yourself again.

I have been my Father’s caregiver for the past 4 years. He has dementia and cannot care for himself. Now we are at the point of he needs assisted living and we have been giving him his care in his home. What are my rights as a caregiver as far as the home goes? Do we have to sale and turn the funds over to the nursing home. Will we have to relocate now after we have cared for him in a house that he wanted us to have and it was a rental. His home was lost because a family member had power of attorney and reverse mortgaged it and it was unaffordable to keep him there. Hence we brought him to live with us. What are our rights as his caregiver in this situation?

Instead of paper plates, invest in some reusable plastic ones that you can use for picnics (or use some you already own). Same with the silverware.

Something we like to bring on picnics is crackers, cheese, and pepperoni. We also frequently bring canned olives (don’t forget a can opener!).

Thanks for this advice for ice skating with your kids. I’m glad you mentioned it’s important to wear protective gear. It seems important to really understand what gear you should wear, especially if it could be good to have more gear if you are planning on ice skating for a long time.

Jason, my grandmother was a jewel like yours. All the detail you wrote ring true (and more) from my experience growing up with 14 cousins. It was priceless. A blessing I would wish on every child and adult.
I am repeating this as much as I can and the magic still works in 2019!
The kids lean in for every hug and kiss. They are learning how much value there is in relationships -especially cousins and grandparents! It works -it is not outdated. If readers don’t believe it it’s the saddest thing to me because in that experience I grew to know unconditional love…and my faith and overcoming strength have their foundation. A very good foundation!

I came home to Ohio for Holidays from Sacramento, CA. I saw a commercial on TV about the Magic of Lights What a treat for me this Holiday. We went around 8:30p last night and traffic was light. Only two cars in front of us to enter fairgrounds. Traffic moved at a steady pace throughout display. So so so many AWESOME displays… not sure where to start. From the Evil Kenevil motorcycle display to Santa bouncing basketball between his legs to the Navity display to First Engery Mega Trees to Pepco lighted drive through car wash. And funds benefit one of LeBron James foundations. Displays were all so very cool and awesome. I can’t imagine the hard work from the workers; volunteers and companies that graciously put together the displays for the public to enjoy. THANK YOU Eaton; First Engery; Pepco and all the others companies that donated their time, energy and efforts to making the Magic of Lights possible. I enjoyed and felt the MAGIC. GOOD JOB and BLESSINGS TO ALL.

HIDDEN VALLEY PARK in Madison,Ohio and Fairport Marine Museum and Lighthouse in Fairport, Ohio. Those are 2 of our favorite places to sled. I love Hidden Valley park because it has 2 different hills for different age groups. I have a 5 year old and 10 year old and they love this park for that reason. It also has steps to go back up the hill and enjoy the ride back down. I hope this makes it to the magazine and hope we get to enjoy the tickets as well! Thanks and happy New year!!

The Jolly Holiday Village is located in the Arts and Crafts Building where you can purchase Smores kits (there is a fire pit outside in the back) visit Santa, ride bumper cars, purchase hot drinks and more. As for drive time it is roughly 15 to 20 minutes as you slowly weave your way through. Add to this a stop at the village you can figure a little over an hour.

I have learned, after my son had it 3 times in a row and my daughter twice, that kids are still contagious for weeks after all the symptoms go away. It remains in their system for quite a while after all the blisters disappear so quarantining yourself and your kid isn’t necessary. So no worries next time your kid gets it. As long as they don’t have a fever they are good to go back to daycare.
I couldn’t feasibly keep my kids home every time they got sick. And it makes it nearly impossible to be able to sanitize stuff if you don’t know how long the virus is still in their symptom. It’s no fun at all that’s for sure!
